The building design and services technology teach by example

The BREEAM “Excellent” building helps teach students about the techniques of sustainable building by example. Excellent environmental standards underpin every aspect of the design which incorporates “green” technologies such as rainwater harvesting, solar & biomass heating, and high-efficiency lighting backed by a sophisticated, responsive Delmatic DALI system.

DALI management and monitoring across the site

A Delmatic DALI systems controls lighting throughout the complex including the extensive workshops, lecture theatres, communal interactive spaces, teaching spaces and academic offices. Light sources and luminaires were selected to maximise their light output ratio, and this inherent efficiency has been further enhanced by the Delmatic system. Monitoring and testing of emergency lighting is also managed through the Delmatic DALI system.

Presence and absence detection, daylight linking, and integrated solar shading

Multisensors within all areas optimise efficiency by turning lighting off in unoccupied spaces and daylight linking which reduces illumination where sufficient natural daylight is available. Classrooms are provided with local user override via pushbutton switches or scene set switches which include control of window blinds and solar shading.

A fresh approach to organising space

The new Faculty building creates a fresh approach to organising spaces so that they support new ways of learning and create a ‘community of learners’. Key criteria for the lighting and controls were to combine energy efficiency with a convenient and pleasant working environment for students and staff alike, and Delmatic worked closely with the design team to deliver an optimum solution based on our project experience within the education sector.

Total flexibility, versatility and sustainability

The system is totally flexible and versatile to suit the evolving requirements of the user as well as the differing scenarios for the purposes of security, maintenance, cleaning and normal occupancy. The system provides substantial energy savings, achieves longer lamp life as a result of the shorter burning times and, in turn, reduces maintenance costs and disposal costs with financial and sustainability benefits.
